Description

Commonly used for installations related to groundwater and environmental protection, gas barriers are essential in areas where radon or methane gas are a risk - radon can occur in granite formations, while carbon dioxide and methane occurs due to the decomposition of organic matter like coal, peat, or silt.

Brownfield Site Developments and Contaminated Land Sites

For brownfield sites developments, including old industrial areas or contaminated land, it is crucial to have effective gas barriers in place to deter harmful gases, hydrocarbons, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may permeate into buildings. An impermeable barrier is usually incorporated into the building's foundations, along with a highly permeable ventilation layer. Hazardous gases and VOCs can migrate upward through the soil and gather beneath the membrane in a sump, which is where they are carefully vented and then diffused into the environment.
The primary purpose of the gas barrier membrane is to avoid the entrance of harmful gases through cracks, construction joints, or service openings in the floor slab. It is essential that it covers the entire plan area, including all external faces, to effectively seal both the ground slab and any cavity walls or voids in hollow concrete blockwork. It is particularly important to consider sites infiltrated with hydrocarbons or VOCs, as these compounds are highly mobile and find it easy to migrate through membrane materials that are not suitable. While aluminium laminates allow for excellent gas barrier properties, they can delaminate when subject to hydrocarbon vapours or VOCs, and the aluminium layer is prone to oxidation if moisture penetrates exposed edges.
